Visa pour l'image 2010 (part 2/2eme partie/del 2)

Every evening at the festival, there is a projection in a huge outdoor theater. Awards are given out, and you get to see different slideshows. For example, one could be the major news between April and May in images, another a feature from Sierra Leone, a third images describing environmental issues in Antarctis, etc. This is, in my opinion, the most interesting part of the festival.
Those who have a badge, like professionnals paying a fee for special advantages, goes in first, but the nights we were there, we had no problem getting seats.

There are also conferences on different subjects. We went to the one organized by ELLE magazine on the image of the woman in photojournalism. All in all, we found the lectures rather consensual and not very interesting, even if one learned a few things about the female stereotypes, victims or not in the war and conflicts around the world.

A very nice part of the festival is how easy it is to meet people who share the same passion as yourself — photography! Thanks to a mutual friend, Francesca and I had the pleasure to get to know Audrey Bardou (above), a talented young photojournalist, who just published a series of photos in the very first issue of burn magazine.

The tapas bar Bar Celone soon became our favourite spot, and we met lots of nice festival visitors there. Above is Fra on the couch with Thierry, photo editor, and Laure, photoreporter. (The red ribbon around their necks is the mentioned festival badge.)

Visa pour l'image is an annual, international festival for photojournalism in Perpignan, in the south of France. This year it takes place for the 22th time, between the 28th of August and the 12th of September. During these two weeks, a great crowd invades the city and there are exhibitions without any entrance fee just about everywhere.

With my swiss friend, photographer Francesca, I went there for a couple of days to stroll around and feel the atmosphere of this very special event. We saw almost all the official shows, like here above one of our absolute favourites, the photos by Andrea Star Reese of homeless people. The other two shows I really recommend is the work on american polygamy by Stephanie Sinclair (that won an award during the days we where there) and "Ian Fisher, american soldier" by Craig F. Walker.

Exhibitions of varying quality, not included in the official program, is known as the "Festival Off". Above, strong photos of mentally sick people, viewed as "possesed", in Madagascar by Patrick Castagnas, showed in the window of the local grocery store.

Too many cameras/Trop d'appareils photo/För många kameror

Sunday, the annual Ganesh celebration took place in my neighbourhood. Every year, I have the impression that the crowd is getting bigger and bigger. And a large number has a camera with them: professional cameras, point and shoots, cam phones….  It was even hard to take a picture without getting at least one other photographer in it. This didn't keep me from having a really good time, getting my kicks as a photoreporter. It's not every day you can participate in such an intense, colorful and mystical event in Paris!
The day ended on the outdoor tables of an indian restaurant with The Paris Photography Meetup Group. But all of a sudden, no indians around us. They were all eating in the street, just beside the temple. An frankly, what I saw on their paper plates looked much better than my microwaved rice mix. Next year, I'll eat with them, and I try to persuade the other photographers from the group to come with me!

Mon après-midi avec / My afternoon with / Min eftermiddag med Blandine et/and/och Thao

Since I started posting my photos on Flickr, my social network has really expanded. Never would I have thought meeting so many interesting and nice people with a passion for photography on the internet, from France and sometimes even from the rest of the world.
This saturday, I met up with Blandine — a Lille Flickr friend aka bcommeberenice, who recently moved to the south of France — who was in Paris for a few days with her brand new Canon camera.
Together with Thao — a Paris flickrite just back home from a trip to the States — we had a walk through a sunny summer Paris. We talked, ate icecream, stopped for a drink, took some photos…
Long live the virtual photo communities, who connects you with great people in the real world !

Nothing never happens/Desert d'été/Sommaröken

If you wonder what happened to me, I'm not dead. I just don't have much to write about. My camera is on service due to a sensor problem. When I try to see an exhibition, it's closed (August in Paris…) Everybody is on holiday, except me.
But I promise you that this fall will be very exciting and that I will have lots and lots to talk about. Just you wait and see!

Tomorrow is the last day of a very interesting architecture show at the Centre Pompidou. It is called Dreamlands, and shows how certain virtual places, for example from world fairs and theme parks, have inspired modern day architecture.
It starts with surrealism: Dali and his creation for the 1939 world fair in New York, Dream of Vénus. After that, the slideshow "Learning from Las Vegas" is a great lesson about the construction of the famous strip and its neon signs. This is followed by works around Hollywood,  Disneyworld, Shanghai, Dubaï… Everywhere in the exhibiton you find model constructions of cities and movies projected directly on the walls. Some great stuff!
Just for the photography part, it's worth a visit. Martin Parr is of course represented, as well the thaï Manit Sriwanichpoom, Kwong Chi Tseng (USA), Reem al Ghaith (Dubaï) and Stéphane Couturier (France), as well as a bunch of other photographers with images where virtual and real get mixed up. Until 9th of August

On the blog of newspaper Libération today, a photo by me, taken on a trip with friends, to Chamarande.
