Arles Day/Jour/Dag 2

After an intense first day, day 2 was a little less busy. I had a portfolio lecture, listned to a talk at the Foam HQ, saw Chris Marker at Palais de l'Archevèche and Douglas Gordon at Méjan and spent the evening at the antique theatre.

Efter en fullpackad första dag, innehöll dag två en portfoliovisning, en konferens på Foams högkvarter, Chris Marker på Palais de l'Archevèche och Douglas Gordon på Méjan och till slut en nattlig filmvisning i den antika utomhusteatern.

Arles Day/Jour/Dag 1

What a crazy start! So much too see at the Rencontres d'Arles. This is what my first day looked like in images.

Quel début de folie ! Tellement de choses à voir aux Rencontres d'Arles. Voici un récit en images de mon premier journée sur place.

Betül & La Goutte d'Or

Il y a d'autres photographes que Martin Parr qui s'intéresse au quartier de la Goutte d'Or à Paris. Ma copine Betül par example. Elle n'y habite pas, mais c'est en couvrant quelques uns de ses festivals, elle a découvert ce petit morceaux du 18ème arrondissement. Cet endroit a une réputation "sulfureuse", qui pourtant, selon elle, ne représente pas l'essence même du quartier. "Promouvoir un lieu, encore trop stigmatisé et pourtant si chaleureux, rendre hommage aux habitants, à l'ambiance festive, voilà ce que j'ai voulu faire en prenant ces clichés.", raconte elle. "Ce quartier, transgénérationnel, est un véritable vivier culturel. Les animations se créent avec et autour des riverains, tout en allant vers les autres, créant une énergie contagieuse." Ses photos de rue, qu'elle exposait à la cave Don Doudine pendant le festival "La goutte d'Or en fête". l'ont bien montré.

There are other photographers than Martin Parr who take interest in the Parisian neighbourhood la Goutte d'Or. My friend Betül for exemple. She's not a resident, but discovered this small part of the 18th arrondissement while covering different festivals here. It has a reputation of being a "seedy" area, but according to Betül, this does not reflect its main essence. "By taking these pictures, I wanted to promote a stigmatized, yet warm, place and at the same time pay a tribute to its inhabitants and the festive atmosphere.", she tells me. "This transgenerational area is a hotbed of culture. The animations are created with and around the habitants, while still reaching out to others, thus creating a contagious energy." Her street photos, that she showed at the wine cellar Don Doudine during the festival "La goutte d'Or en fête". proves this.

Photographer Cedric Helsly is now showing his work at the wine shop Don Doudine, an exhibition called Le Marcheur. 

Det finns andra fotografer än Martin Parr som intresserar sig för kvarteret Goutte d'Or i Paris. Min kompis Betül t.ex. Hon bor inte där, men har arbetet som festivalfotograf där och på så sätt upptäckt den här lilla biten av 18e arrondissemanget. Det har rykte om sig att vara "stökigt", men enligt henne är inte denna bild representativ för kvarteret som helhet. "Genom mina bilder ville jag visa att detta så stigmatiserade kvarter är fyllt av mänsklig värme, samt hylla invånarna och den festliga stämningen.", berättar hon. "Detta kvarter, där generationerna möts, är en veritabel plantskola för olika kulturer. Aktiviteter organiseras av och med invånarna, samtidigt som man bjuder in andra. Detta skapar en energi som smittar av sig" Hennes gatubilder, som hon ställde ut hos vinkällaren Don Doudine under festivalen "La goutte d'Or en fête". förmedlar fint denna känsla.

Per Hüttner

A nomad and an artist. Per Hüttner's work is about questioning our vision of the world and our place in it.What are the places that inspires us to think and act in a new way? And if people change, does the world change too?

I knew Per in 1992, when I did the graphic design for one of his exhibition catalogues (an art/science project with Elias Arnér), but since then we had lost touch. Until some days ago, thanks to new social media, when I realized we are practically neighbors here in Paris!

So, time for coffee and a chat. He also kindly offered me a copy of his book Democracy and Desire. I was pretty amazed to see the photos in it, among them some very interesting self portraits (above).

Per told me, that even if he consider Paris as his base, he is traveling pretty much all the time — to China, L.A., London, Jordan…— and that he is using all kinds of media to express himself artistically. Photography is very much present in the above project, but also in the series Jogging in exotic cities.

A truly inspiring person, I hope it won't take another fifteen years 'til we meet next time!

Nomade et artiste. L'œuvre de Per Hüttner questionne notre vision du monde et la place qu'on occupe dedans. Quels sont les lieux qui nous incite à penser et à agir autrement ? Et si les gens changent, est-ce que le monde change à son tour ?

J'ai connu Per en 1992, quand j'ai fait la conception graphique d'un catalogue d'exposition pour lui et Elias Arner (un projet qui liait l'art et la science), mais après, on s'est perdu de vue. Jusqu'à il y a quelques jours, quand, grace à un réseau sociale sur le net, j'ai réalisé que nous sommes pratiquement voisins ici à Paris!

Donc, un café et une mise à jour s'imposait. En plus, il m'a gentiment offert son livre Démocratie et Désir. J'ai été très impressionée par les photos dedans, parmi elles quelques autoportraits très intéressants (cf. ci-dessus).

Per m'a raconté, que même si Paris aujourd'hui lui sert de base, il voyage pratiquement tout le temps — en Chine, à L.A. et Londres, en Jordanie… — et qu'il se sert des techniques différentes pour son travail artistique. La photographie, on trouve dans son projet déjà cité, mais aussi dans la série Jogging in exotic cities.

Comme c'est quelqu'un qui inspire beaucup, j'espère que ça ne va pas durer encore quinze ans pour qu'on se voit une prochaine fois !

Nomad och konstnär. Per Hüttners verk handlar om att ifrågasätta synen på omgivningen och vår roll i den. Vilka platser inspirerar oss att tänka och agera på ett nytt sätt? Och om människorna förändras, förändras då världen i sin tur?
Jag lärde känna Per 1992, då jag gjorde den grafiska designen i en av hans utställningskataloger (ett projekt tillsamans med Elias Arnér som blandade konst och vetenskap), men sedan dess hade vi förlorat kontakten. Tills för bara några dagar sedan, då jag tack vare ett webburet socialt nätverk insåg att vi praktiskt taget är grannar här i Paris!
Så dags för kaffe och en pratstund och dessutom ett ex av hans bok Democracy and desire, som han snällt nog gav mig. Jag blev mycket imponerad av fotona i den, däribland några mycket intressanta självporträtt (se ovan).
Per berättade, att även om Paris idag fungerar som hans bas, är han ständigt på resande fot — Kina, LA, London, Jordanien…— och han använder sig hela tiden av olika tekniker för att uttrycka sig konstnärligt. Fotografi används i ovanstående projekt, men också i serien Jogging in exotic cities.Kort sagt, en verkligt inspirerande människa, så jag hoppas att det inte dröjer ytterligare femton år tills vi ses igen!

Hello India!

This is not that/Galerie Duboys

There is a lot of India in Paris at the moment. First of all, the big Paris-Dehli-Bombay show at the Centre Pompidou. Then it's Indian season, Saison Indienne, at the Musée Guimet. An Indian photographer, Prune Nourry, participates in the Itinérances show at Polka Galerie and of course, the British artist Anish Kapoor — his fantastic Monumenta 2011 installation Leviathan at Grand Palais ending today — who was born in Bombay.
In the Marais, I ran into a very nice new gallery the other day, Galerie Duboys, run by a group of patrons of contemorary art. Until July 2, they propose a group show, This is not that, introducing new Indian photographers to the Parisian audience. I was amazed to see all this talent, and the incredible individuality in personal style of each artist.
Last but not least, the arrival of an Indian photography magazine edited in New Dehli: PIX - A Photography Quarterly. I hope to find a copy of it in Paris soon ! 

Il y a beaucoup d'Inde à Paris en ce moment. D'abord, la grande expo Paris-Dehli-Bombay au Centre Pompidou. Il y a aussi Saison Indienne chez le Musée Guimet, puis une photographe indienne, Prune Nourry, participe à l'expo du groupe Itinérances à la Polka Galerie. Et bien sûr, il y a l'artiste britanique Anish Kapoor qui est né à Bombay, dont l'installation incroyable Leviathan, dans le cadre de Monumenta 2011 au Grand Palais, se termine aujourd'hui.
Dans le Marais, j'ai découvert une nouvelle espace très intéressant l'autre jour, le Galerie Duboys, ouvert par des mécènes d'art contemporain. Jusqu'au 2 juillet, on peut y voir une exposition collective, This is not that, qui introduise des nouveaux photographes indiens au publique parisien. J'étais émerveillé de voir tant de talent et la maturité artistique dans le style de chacun.
Finalement, il paraît qu'une nouvelle magazine photo indien est publié à New Dehli: PIX - A Photography Quarterly. J'espère en trouver une copie à Paris dans pas longtemps !

Det handlar mycket om Indien i Paris just nu. Först och främst finns den stora utställningen Paris-Dehli-Bombay på Centre Pompidou. Det är också indisk årstid, Saison Indienne hos Musée Guimet, och en indisk fotograf, Prune Nourry, deltar i grupputställningen Itinérances på Polka Galerie. Och vi får ju inte glömma den brittiske konstnären Anish Kapoor som är född i Bombay. Hans otroliga  installation Leviathan, som ingår i Monumenta 2011 på Grand Palais, avslutas idag.
I Marais-kvarteret, upptäckte jag härom dagen ett nytt intressant galleri, Galerie Duboys, som drivs av en grupp konstmecenater. Till och med den 2 juillet, kan man där se utställningen This is not that, som presenterar ett antal nya indiska fotografer för Paris konstpublik. Jag var verkligen imponerad av att se så mycket talang samt till vilken grad varje fotograf har sin individuella stil och sitt konstnärliga uttryck.
Sist men inte minst, det sägs att en ny indisk fototidning har startats i New Dehli: PIX - A Photography Quarterly. Jag hoppas hitta ett ex av den i Paris snarast!
