Cette semaine, j’ai eu un grand coup de cœur pour l’exposition Fotonovelas extension à la Galerie Polaris, avec les images du photographe mexicain Antonio Caballero. Voici trois raisons pour aller la voir :
Un parcours artistique original Même s’il était considéré le plus grand photographe de fotonovelas (roman photo) dans les années 60 et 70 au Mexique, cela n’était pour Antonio Caballero qu’une occupation alimentaire — jusqu’à ce qu’on lui propose d’exposer dans une galerie d’art trente ans plus tard ! Cet artiste qui s’ignorait est aujourd’hui à sa deuxième exposition parisienne, avec des tirages en grand format qui mettent en évidence la qualité exceptionnelle de ses prises de vue.
L’œil d’avant-garde Des cadrages audacieux et des compositions très en avance pour son époque fait que l’on compare aujourd’hui son œuvre aux film stills de Cindy Sherman ainsi que les mises en scène du photographe Jeff Wall.
Des plans cinématographiques Sorties de leur contexte original, les photos d’Antonio Caballero font plus penser aux scènes dans des films d’Antonioni ou de Truffaut, qu’un roman photo. Même sans le texte accompagnant, la narration fonctionne, et cela dans des décors et avec des costumes tous dignes d’un magazine de mode ! Jusqu’au 29 mai

This week, my favourite gallery show is the Fotonovelas extension at the Galerie Polaris hosting work by mexican photographer Antonio Caballero. Here are three good reasons to go see it:
The development of his art Even though considered the biggest photographer of fotonovelas (photo novels) in Mexico in the 60s and 70s, for Antonio Caballero it was just a way to earn his living — until thirty years later, when he got an offer to expose his photos in a gallery ! This is the second parisian show for a photographer formerly unaware of the artistic dimension in his work, with large format prints that really shows off their exceptional technical and visual quality.
His avant-garde view Bold crops and compositions way ahead of their time is the reason his work is today compared to the Cindy Sherman film stills as well as the staged photos by Jeff Wall.
A cinematographic touch Taken out of their original context, the photos of Antonio Caballero seem closer to scenes from a movie by Antonioni or Truffaut, than those of a photo novel. Even without text, the narration works very well, and this on a set and with costumes worthy those of a fashion magazine ! Until May 29
If you want to keep a foot in the world of the stage, without changing neighborhood, why not go and see the show Action! at the Polka Galerie? You’ll find, amongst others, behind the scenes photos from some of the biggest moments in cinema history, by Mary Ellen Mark, Willy Rizzo, Stefano de Luigi… Until May 22

Ett ovanligt konstnärsöde Även om han ansågs vara den störste fotografen av fotonovelas (bildnoveller) i Mexiko under 60- och 70-talet, var detta inte för Antonio Caballero något annat än ett sätt att tjäna sitt levebröd — tills han fick förslaget att ställa ut i ett konstgalleri trettio år senare! Och trots att han länge varit omedveten om sin konstnärliga potential, är han nu inne på sin andra utställning i Paris, med printar i storformat som vittnar om den höga kvalitetsnivån på hans bilder.
Före sin tid De djärva beskärningarna och kompositionerna som känns långt före sin tid, gör att man idag jämför hans verk med såväl Cindy Shermans film stills som med fotografen Jeff Wall iscensatta bilder.
Cinematografisk känsla Tagna ur sitt originalsammanhang, tycks Antonio Caballeros bilder snarare komma från en film av Antonioni eller Truffaut, än från en fotonovell. Även utan tillhörande text, fungerar berättandet utmärkt, och detta i en dekor och med kläder som hämtade från ett modemagasin! T.o.m. 29 maj

Det är förmodligen bättre att se Caballeros's bilder utan tillhörande text!
