Spéos International Photography School

Spéos is an international photo school in Paris, that offers a one-year program to become a professional photographer. Yesterday it was time for the annual final exhibition. There were three parts: one room where each student showed a selected photo, another with portfolios to review and a third with different slideshows running on the computers.
You find a little bit of everything here: fashion, still life, photo reportage… My general impression was that even though the students indeed seem technically skilled, not many of them have yet developped an eye of their own and a coherency in their work. A few that for me stood out were Eric Valdenaire, Virunan Chiddaycha, Philip Ka and Julia Sestier. I also met and talked with a very talented student, Chloe Lodge, who is a friend of a friend. Spéos est une école photo à Paris, qui propose une formation d'un an pour apprendre la photographie au niveau pro. Hier, l'heure est venue pour leur exposition de fin d'année. L'expo était divisée en trois partie: une salle où chaque élève avait une photo sélectionné, une autre où l'on pouvait feuilleter les portfolios de tout le monde et une salle informatique, où il y avait un diaporama différent sur chaque ordinateur ainsi qu'un grand projeté au mur.
On trouve un peu de tout ici: de la mode, des natures mortes, des reportages… Mon impression générale était que même si les étudiants me semblent techniquement très accomplis, la plupart n'ont pas encore un style bien à eux ou une cohérence dans leur travail. Ceux qui, à mon humble avis, sortaient du lot, c'était : Eric Valdenaire, Virunan Chiddaycha, Philip Ka et Julia Sestier. J'ai aussi rencontré et discuté avec une étudiante pleine de talent, Chloe Lodge, amie d'une amie. Mini entretien ci-dessous.

Spéos är en internationell fotoskola i Paris, som har en ettårig utbildning för att bli professionell fotograf. Igår var det dags för den årliga examensutställningen. Den var i tre delar: Fotostudion, där varje elev ställde ut ett utvalt fotografi, en stor sal där man kunde bläddra i vars och ens portfolio och en tredje i ett dataklassrum, där man kunde se olika bildvisningar på skärmarna samt ett centralt bildspel som projicerades på en vägg.
Man hittar lite av varje på den här typen av utställning: mode, stilleben, reportagefoto… Min allmänna uppfattning var att även om eleverna verkar ha uppnått en hög teknisk nivå, har de flesta ännu inte hunnit skaffa sig ett eget synsätt eller en enhetlighet i bilderna. Några av de som för mig stod ut var: Eric Valdenaire, Virunan Chiddaycha, Philip Ka and Julia Sestier. Jag fick också tillfälle att träffa och prata lite med en mycket begåvad elev, Chloe Lodge, detta via en gemensam vän. Mera här nedanför.

At the Spéos show, I had the pleasure to meet Chloe Lodge, who is a friend of my friend Karin, american blogger in Paris. Chloe showed a great book she has created on the Blurb website, called Modern women at home in a foreign land, where she portrays different expat women, among them Karin.
Chloe told me her absolute goal would be to work for the National Geographic magazine, but as long as she can do photojournalism and portraits as well as some projects of her own on the side, she will be fully content. On the question about what is the most important thing she has learnt at Spéos, she said that it would be to ask yourself, why you are taking a certain photo, and then make sure that this comes through to the viewer, even if it is just in a small detail.
Chloe has yet two months of a master program at the school, but then I'm sure she will go out in the world to accomplish just that. Keep an eye on her!

À l'expo Spéos, j'ai eu le plaisir de rencontrer Chloe Lodge, une amie de ma copine Karin, blogeuse américaine à Paris. Chloe montrait un très beau livre, qu'elle a crée sur le site Blurb, intitulé Modern women at home in a foreign land, dans lequel elle montre des portraits qu'elle a fait des differentes femmes expatriés, dont parmi elles Karin.
Chloe m'a expliqué que son but ultime serait de travailler pour le magazine National Geographic magazine, mais tant qu'elle puisse faire des photoreportages et de portraits, et au même temps des projets perso sur le côté, elle serait parfaitement contente. Sur la question de la chose la plus importante qu'elle ait appris chez Spéos, elle m'a dit que c'est de savoir pourquoi elle fait une certaine photo, puis faire en sorte que le spectateur ressent cela, même si c'est juste par un petit détail.
Chloe a encore deux mois de programme master à terminer, mais après je suis sûre qu'elle sortira dans le monde pour créer des photos qui communiquent des choses fortes. Une photographe à suivre.

På Spéos-utställningen, fick jag nöjet att lära känna Chloe Lodge, vän till min vän Karin, amerikansk bloggare i Paris. Chloe visade upp en jättefin bok som hon har skapat med hjälp av sajten Blurb, med titeln Modern women at home in a foreign land, där hon porträtterar olika utlandsboende kvinnor, bland dem Karin.
Chloe berättade för mig att hennes stora dröm är att jobba för tidningen National Geographic, men så länge hon får göra fotoreportage och ta porträttbilder, samt ha en del egna projekt vid sidan om, är hon helt klart nöjd. På frågan om det viktigaste hon lärt sig på Spéos, svarade hon att det är att alltid ifrågasätta vad man vill ha sagt med en bild, och sedan försäkra sig om att det är just det man kommunicerar till åskådaren, även om det så bara är med hjälp av en liten detalj.
Chloe har två månader kvar på ett masterutbildning på skolan, men sedan är jag säker på att hon kommer att ge sig ut i världen och åstadkomma just detta. Håll utkik efter henne!
