Betül & La Goutte d'Or

Il y a d'autres photographes que Martin Parr qui s'intéresse au quartier de la Goutte d'Or à Paris. Ma copine Betül par example. Elle n'y habite pas, mais c'est en couvrant quelques uns de ses festivals, elle a découvert ce petit morceaux du 18ème arrondissement. Cet endroit a une réputation "sulfureuse", qui pourtant, selon elle, ne représente pas l'essence même du quartier. "Promouvoir un lieu, encore trop stigmatisé et pourtant si chaleureux, rendre hommage aux habitants, à l'ambiance festive, voilà ce que j'ai voulu faire en prenant ces clichés.", raconte elle. "Ce quartier, transgénérationnel, est un véritable vivier culturel. Les animations se créent avec et autour des riverains, tout en allant vers les autres, créant une énergie contagieuse." Ses photos de rue, qu'elle exposait à la cave Don Doudine pendant le festival "La goutte d'Or en fête". l'ont bien montré.

There are other photographers than Martin Parr who take interest in the Parisian neighbourhood la Goutte d'Or. My friend Betül for exemple. She's not a resident, but discovered this small part of the 18th arrondissement while covering different festivals here. It has a reputation of being a "seedy" area, but according to Betül, this does not reflect its main essence. "By taking these pictures, I wanted to promote a stigmatized, yet warm, place and at the same time pay a tribute to its inhabitants and the festive atmosphere.", she tells me. "This transgenerational area is a hotbed of culture. The animations are created with and around the habitants, while still reaching out to others, thus creating a contagious energy." Her street photos, that she showed at the wine cellar Don Doudine during the festival "La goutte d'Or en fête". proves this.

Det finns andra fotografer än Martin Parr som intresserar sig för kvarteret Goutte d'Or i Paris. Min kompis Betül t.ex. Hon bor inte där, men har arbetet som festivalfotograf där och på så sätt upptäckt den här lilla biten av 18e arrondissemanget. Det har rykte om sig att vara "stökigt", men enligt henne är inte denna bild representativ för kvarteret som helhet. "Genom mina bilder ville jag visa att detta så stigmatiserade kvarter är fyllt av mänsklig värme, samt hylla invånarna och den festliga stämningen.", berättar hon. "Detta kvarter, där generationerna möts, är en veritabel plantskola för olika kulturer. Aktiviteter organiseras av och med invånarna, samtidigt som man bjuder in andra. Detta skapar en energi som smittar av sig" Hennes gatubilder, som hon ställde ut hos vinkällaren Don Doudine under festivalen "La goutte d'Or en fête". förmedlar fint denna känsla.

Per Hüttner

A nomad and an artist. Per Hüttner's work is about questioning our vision of the world and our place in it.What are the places that inspires us to think and act in a new way? And if people change, does the world change too?

I knew Per in 1992, when I did the graphic design for one of his exhibition catalogues (an art/science project with Elias Arnér), but since then we had lost touch. Until some days ago, thanks to new social media, when I realized we are practically neighbors here in Paris!

So, time for coffee and a chat. He also kindly offered me a copy of his book Democracy and Desire. I was pretty amazed to see the photos in it, among them some very interesting self portraits (above).

Per told me, that even if he consider Paris as his base, he is traveling pretty much all the time — to China, L.A., London, Jordan…— and that he is using all kinds of media to express himself artistically. Photography is very much present in the above project, but also in the series Jogging in exotic cities.

A truly inspiring person, I hope it won't take another fifteen years 'til we meet next time!

Nomade et artiste. L'œuvre de Per Hüttner questionne notre vision du monde et la place qu'on occupe dedans. Quels sont les lieux qui nous incite à penser et à agir autrement ? Et si les gens changent, est-ce que le monde change à son tour ?

J'ai connu Per en 1992, quand j'ai fait la conception graphique d'un catalogue d'exposition pour lui et Elias Arner (un projet qui liait l'art et la science), mais après, on s'est perdu de vue. Jusqu'à il y a quelques jours, quand, grace à un réseau sociale sur le net, j'ai réalisé que nous sommes pratiquement voisins ici à Paris!

Donc, un café et une mise à jour s'imposait. En plus, il m'a gentiment offert son livre Démocratie et Désir. J'ai été très impressionée par les photos dedans, parmi elles quelques autoportraits très intéressants (cf. ci-dessus).

Per m'a raconté, que même si Paris aujourd'hui lui sert de base, il voyage pratiquement tout le temps — en Chine, à L.A. et Londres, en Jordanie… — et qu'il se sert des techniques différentes pour son travail artistique. La photographie, on trouve dans son projet déjà cité, mais aussi dans la série Jogging in exotic cities.

Comme c'est quelqu'un qui inspire beaucup, j'espère que ça ne va pas durer encore quinze ans pour qu'on se voit une prochaine fois !

Nomad och konstnär. Per Hüttners verk handlar om att ifrågasätta synen på omgivningen och vår roll i den. Vilka platser inspirerar oss att tänka och agera på ett nytt sätt? Och om människorna förändras, förändras då världen i sin tur?
Jag lärde känna Per 1992, då jag gjorde den grafiska designen i en av hans utställningskataloger (ett projekt tillsamans med Elias Arnér som blandade konst och vetenskap), men sedan dess hade vi förlorat kontakten. Tills för bara några dagar sedan, då jag tack vare ett webburet socialt nätverk insåg att vi praktiskt taget är grannar här i Paris!
Så dags för kaffe och en pratstund och dessutom ett ex av hans bok Democracy and desire, som han snällt nog gav mig. Jag blev mycket imponerad av fotona i den, däribland några mycket intressanta självporträtt (se ovan).
Per berättade, att även om Paris idag fungerar som hans bas, är han ständigt på resande fot — Kina, LA, London, Jordanien…— och han använder sig hela tiden av olika tekniker för att uttrycka sig konstnärligt. Fotografi används i ovanstående projekt, men också i serien Jogging in exotic cities.Kort sagt, en verkligt inspirerande människa, så jag hoppas att det inte dröjer ytterligare femton år tills vi ses igen!

Hello India!

This is not that/Galerie Duboys

There is a lot of India in Paris at the moment. First of all, the big Paris-Dehli-Bombay show at the Centre Pompidou. Then it's Indian season, Saison Indienne, at the Musée Guimet. An Indian photographer, Prune Nourry, participates in the Itinérances show at Polka Galerie and of course, the British artist Anish Kapoor — his fantastic Monumenta 2011 installation Leviathan at Grand Palais ending today — who was born in Bombay.
In the Marais, I ran into a very nice new gallery the other day, Galerie Duboys, run by a group of patrons of contemorary art. Until July 2, they propose a group show, This is not that, introducing new Indian photographers to the Parisian audience. I was amazed to see all this talent, and the incredible individuality in personal style of each artist.
Last but not least, the arrival of an Indian photography magazine edited in New Dehli: PIX - A Photography Quarterly. I hope to find a copy of it in Paris soon ! 

Il y a beaucoup d'Inde à Paris en ce moment. D'abord, la grande expo Paris-Dehli-Bombay au Centre Pompidou. Il y a aussi Saison Indienne chez le Musée Guimet, puis une photographe indienne, Prune Nourry, participe à l'expo du groupe Itinérances à la Polka Galerie. Et bien sûr, il y a l'artiste britanique Anish Kapoor qui est né à Bombay, dont l'installation incroyable Leviathan, dans le cadre de Monumenta 2011 au Grand Palais, se termine aujourd'hui.
Dans le Marais, j'ai découvert une nouvelle espace très intéressant l'autre jour, le Galerie Duboys, ouvert par des mécènes d'art contemporain. Jusqu'au 2 juillet, on peut y voir une exposition collective, This is not that, qui introduise des nouveaux photographes indiens au publique parisien. J'étais émerveillé de voir tant de talent et la maturité artistique dans le style de chacun.
Finalement, il paraît qu'une nouvelle magazine photo indien est publié à New Dehli: PIX - A Photography Quarterly. J'espère en trouver une copie à Paris dans pas longtemps !

Det handlar mycket om Indien i Paris just nu. Först och främst finns den stora utställningen Paris-Dehli-Bombay på Centre Pompidou. Det är också indisk årstid, Saison Indienne hos Musée Guimet, och en indisk fotograf, Prune Nourry, deltar i grupputställningen Itinérances på Polka Galerie. Och vi får ju inte glömma den brittiske konstnären Anish Kapoor som är född i Bombay. Hans otroliga  installation Leviathan, som ingår i Monumenta 2011 på Grand Palais, avslutas idag.
I Marais-kvarteret, upptäckte jag härom dagen ett nytt intressant galleri, Galerie Duboys, som drivs av en grupp konstmecenater. Till och med den 2 juillet, kan man där se utställningen This is not that, som presenterar ett antal nya indiska fotografer för Paris konstpublik. Jag var verkligen imponerad av att se så mycket talang samt till vilken grad varje fotograf har sin individuella stil och sitt konstnärliga uttryck.
Sist men inte minst, det sägs att en ny indisk fototidning har startats i New Dehli: PIX - A Photography Quarterly. Jag hoppas hitta ett ex av den i Paris snarast!

Les vies de (The lives of) David Hilliard

I immediately fell for the work of this photographer, in a diary style, that you can see right now at the  Galerie Particulière. David Hilliard is a former student of Philip-Lorca diCorcia, and in his work you see the same skill to capture a frozen moment in time. The exhibition, that documents ten years of his life, contains beautiful diptyqes, triptyqes and quadriptyqes in large formats. I must admit, though, having a preference for the book, that you can page through at the gallery, because of the more complete picture it gives us. Until July 30 

Coup de cœur pour ce photographe et son style façon journal intime, qui expose en ce moment à La Galerie Particulière. David Hilliard a étudié la photographie pour, entre autres, Philip-Lorca diCorcia, et on voit dans ses photos la même maîtrise de l'instant figé. L'exposition, qui retracent dix ans de sa vie, est très belle, allant des diptyques au quadriptyques en très grand taille. J'ai quand même une petit préfèrence pour son livre, qu'on peut feuilleter à l'expo, parce que plus complet. Jusqu'au 30 juillet

Jag föll direkt för den här fotografen och hans bilder i dagsboksstil, som just nu ställer ut hos La Galerie Particulière. David Hilliard har studerat fotografi för bl.a. Philip-Lorca diCorcia, och man finner i hans fotografier samma skicklighet i att skildra ett fruset ögonblick. Utställningen, som återskapar tio år av fotografens liv, innehåller vackra diptyker, triptyker och kvadriptyker i stora format. Jag tycker ännu bättre om boken, som finns i blädderex på utställningen, då denna ger en mer uttömmande bild. T.o.m. 30 juli

A photojournalist who has taken fashion pictures, visited by a group of young designers selling their clothes and accessories? It's happening right now at the gallery La Petite Poule Noire, who this weekend welcomes la Boutique Ephémère.
The photographer, Grégoire Eloy, has captured the catwalk of John Galliano for Dior between 2004-2010 in a series of stunning black and white shots — L'ombre du cygne (The shadow of the swan). A former assistant of Stanley Greene, Eloy was awarded la Bourse du Talent Reportage in 2004, and is most known for his excellent work on the situation in the former Soviet Union and central Asia. Until 31 of July 

Un photojournaliste qui a fait des photos de mode, visité par des jeunes créateurs qui vendent leurs fringues et leurs accessoires ? Ca se passe en ce moment à la galerie La Petite Poule Noire, qui accueil ce weekend la Boutique Ephémère.

At the World Press Photo show, you'll find the best press photos of the year — from sports and nature, everyday portraits and culture to war and natural disasters. It's a must for anyone interested in photo journalism. But be aware, between the beautiful shots, there are plenty of shocking images!

World Press Photo, an independent, non-profit organization, is first and foremost known for organizing the world's largest and most prestigious annual press photography contest. Prize-winning photographs are assembled into a traveling exhibition that is visited by over two million people in some 45 countries worldwide. The 2011 exhibition is on display in Moscow, Tokyo, Reykjavik, Berlin, Madrid, Charlottesville, Brisbane, Vilnius, Paris, Amsterdam and Rio de Janeiro. In Paris, you can see the show until the 21th of June 2011 at the Azzedine Alaïa gallery.

Chez World Press Photo, on trouve les meilleurs photos de presse de l'année — ça va de sport et nature, des portraits quotidiens et la culture, jusqu'à la guerre ainsi que les catastrophes naturelles. Si on s'intéresse un minimum au photojournalisme, il ne faut pas manquer à y aller ! Mais attention, parmi les belles photos, il y a aussi des images carrément choquantes.

At the circus/Au cirque/På cirkus

 

Another great experience, working for Le monde des Ados magazine, going to the circus school in Amiens, one hour from Paris, to take photos of some very gifted teenagers! This summer there will be a big circus and street arts festival there, so keep your eyes open.

Encore un reportage très intéressant à faire pour le magazine Le monde des Ados. On est allé à l'école de cirque d'Amiens, et leurs ados super doués, à une heure de Paris avec le train. Cet été, il faut y aller pour le festival de cirque et des arts de la rue.

Ännu ett spännande reportage har jag gjort för tidningen Le monde des Ados. Den här gången begav vi oss till cirkusskolan i Amiens, för att ta bilder av och intervjua ett gäng otroligt begåvade tonåringar. I sommar erbjuds en festival med cirkus och gatuteater i staden som bara ligger en timme med tåg från Paris. Ett besök rekommenderas!

Apartamento magazine

I just love the magazine Apartamento that I discovered at bookstore WH Smith the other day. The photos (by Juergen Teller, Ola Rindal, Thomas Dozol…) are excellent, a very fresh, authentic view on everyday life and interior design. The articles are perhaps a little too often "casual success stories" (at least in my taste), but there are definitely interesting stuff to pick up about design history, photography and literature. I also enjoy the handy size and the quality of the paper — it feels good holding this magazine…

J'adore le magazine Apartamento que je viens de découvrir chez la librairie WH Smith. Les photos  (par Juergen Teller, Ola Rindal, Thomas Dozol…) sont excellentes, et donnent un regard frais et authentique sur la décoration d'intérieur et la vie quotidienne. Les articles sont peut-êtere un peu trop souvent, au moins à mon goût, des "parcours de réussite cool", mais il y a des choses très intéressantes à apprendre sur l'histoire du design, la photographie et la litterature. J'ai aussi kiffé le format très pratique et la qualité du papier — on se sent bien avec cette revue dans les mains…

Jag bara älskar tidningen Apartamento som jag hittade i bokhandeln WH Smith härom dagen. Fotona (av Juergen Teller, Ola Rindal, Thomas Dozol…) är underbara, med en ny och uppfriskande syn på inredningsdesign från en trovärdig, vardaglig synvinkel. Artiklarna är kanske lite för ofta "coola framgångssagor", i alla fall enligt min smak, men det finns helt klart en massa intressanta saker att lära sig om designhistoria, fotografi och litteratur. Jag gillar också det behändiga formatet och pappersvalet, det känns skönt att hålla i den här tidskriften!

Claude Cahun & me/moi/jag

French writer, photographer and artist Claude Cahun (1894 - 1954) is quite new to me. I have most certainly seen some of her photos before, but I didn't know until recently that she was one of the first to experiment with her persona in self portraits. Her current exhibition at the Jeu de Paume in Paris is the perfect opportunity to get to know her work better. When seeing it, I immediately felt connected to her sense of surrealism, the way she disguises herself and the play with photomontage. Some of her images also reminds me of pictures that has influenced me through the years. A personal look back:

L'écrivaine, la photographe et l'artiste Claude Cahun (1894 - 1954) m'est tout à fait nouveau. J'ai déjà dû voir certaines de ses photos, mais jusqu'à récent, je ne savais pas qu'elle a été l'un des premiers à expérimenter avec son persona dans les autoportraits. Son exposition au Jeu de Paume à Paris est une grande chance de mieux connaître son travail. Immédiatement, je m'y suis senti concerné par son sens du surréalisme, ses déguisements et son utilisation du photomontage. Certaines de ses photos me rappellent aussi des images qui m'ont marqué au fil des ans. Un regard en arrière perso :

Den franska författaren, fotografen och konstnären Claude Cahun (1894 - 1954) är rätt ny för mig. Jag hade säkert redan sett hennes bilder, men jag visste inte förrän nyligen att hon var en av de första att experimentera med självporträtt. Den retrospektiva utställningen på Jeu de Paume i Paris är en fantastisk möjlighet att närmare lära känna hennes verk.
Vid mitt besök där, kände jag mig på en gång besläktad med hennes surrealistiska sida, hennes förklädnader och det sätt på vilket hon leker med olika fotomontage.
Några av fotografierna påminner mig också om bilder jag fastnat för genom åren. En liten tillbakablick:


So trendy? Claude Cahun (by her real name Lucy Schwob) as a fashion icon, might not be the first thing that comes to mind. But don't you think she is the inspiration to this fashion feature, in french magazine Femme, from 1985? At the time I remember finding the bald "model" quite weird, now I certainly miss the avant garde-ness of it all.

Tendance ? Claude Cahun (de son vrai nom Lucy Schwob) paraît assez improbable en icône de mode, certes. Mais ne pensez-vous pas qu'elle a servi comme inspiration pour ces pages de mode, sorti du
magazine Femme, anno 1985? À l'époque, je me souviens que j'ai trouvé étrange la "mannequin" chauve. Aujourd'hui, cet esprit avant-garde me manque un peu.

Trendsättare? Claude Cahun (som på riktigt hette Lucy Schwob) som modeikon har man kanske svårt att tänka sig. Men tror du inte att hon har inspirerat det här modereportaget från 1985, i den franska tidningen Femme? På den tiden tyckte jag den skalliga "fotomodellen" var konstig, nu saknar jag avant garde-känslan i det hela.

These two images makes me want to know more about the cultural exchange between Germany and France between the world wars. It seems like such a creative era, cruelly interrupted by the fascist movement. Claude and her partner, Suzanne Malherbe, was in the resistance during the second world war, at Jersey. They showed an astonishing amount of courage and was nearly killed because of their efforts to discourage the nazi enemy.

L'influence indienne? C.C. à gauche (1927). A droite, une photo d'un livre sur les danseurs allemands (1920), que j'ai trouvé dans un magasin de livres d'occasion il y a quinze ans.
Ces deux images me donne envie d'en savoir plus sur les échanges culturels entre l'Allemagne et la France entre les deux guerres mondiales. Il me semble comme une effervescence créative, interrompue brusquement par le mouvement fasciste. Claude et sa compagne, Suzanne Malherbe, étaient dans la résistance pendant la seconde guerre mondiale, à Jersey. Elles ont montré un courage exemplaire et ont failli être punies par la mort pour leurs efforts à démoraliser l'ennemi nazi.

Indisk påverkan? C.C. till vänster (1927). Till höger, ett foto från en bok om tyska dansare (1920), som jag hittade på ett antikvariat för kanske femton år sedan.
Dessa två bilder gör mig nyfiken på kulturutbytet mellan Tyskland och Frankrike under mellankrigstiden. Det tycks mig vara en mycket kreativ period, som bryskt stoppades av det fascistiska maktövertagandena. Claude och hennes livskamrat, Suzanne Malherbe, var aktiva i motståndsrörelsen under andra världskriget, på Jersey. De visade stort mod i och blev närapå dödade pga sin insats med att avskräcka den tyska fienden.
