Photo autumn in Paris/Automne photographique à Paris/Fotohöst i Paris

For photo lovers, there are lots of stuff happening in Paris in October-November. Friday night, I decided to start off fall with a quick tour, to check out some events.

28°

First I went to the opening of the self portrait exhibition at the restaurant 28° est (the one between the two MK2 cinemas at Place de la bataille de Stalingrad). The show is part of the Mon expo en vitrine ("My exhibition in the storefront") festival that goes on in the 19th arrondissement, from October until the beginning of November.
The self portraits are the works of a group of students at the Centre d’Animation Rébeval, taking a year of weekly classes in darkroom techniques, tutored by professional photogarphers. I must say I was quite impressed by the high artistic level  and how well the images work together as a whole. Until October 31

T.o.m. 31 oktober

Zmâla

Looking for some Perpignan spirit, I then continued to the party in honor of the second issue of the a great photographic review Zmâla, that I've already mentioned on this blog. The party took place at the EMI-CFD school, famous for it's course in Photo journalism - that celebrates its 20 years this year - and also for giving out a photographic prize for upcoming talents in the field of photojournalism, the Tremplin Photo.
There were numerous slideshows taking place this evening, but I was a little disappointed, because I had the impression that all the photos, I had already seen in the magazine. Plus I didn't bump into someone I knew, so after a few bites of free food (above), I left.

Galerie G

My last stop was at the Galerie G, that I've talked about several times here. I love the space, plus the exhibition are always very interesting. This time it was the opening of the show Routes et Deroutes, an exhibition on the very urgent theme of migration.
All medias represented, for those like me who love photography, there was a very good slideshow with portraits of expulsed Malien people, by the photographer Magali Hirn. Until October 17

T.o.m. 17 oktober

Finlandia

The gallery/La galerie/Galleriet GunGallery

Visiting Stockholm, my ambition was to discover the new photographic, much talked about, exhibition space Fotografiska. But finally a visit to the art bookstore Konst-ig and some overheard conversation between the staff and a client made me more curious about a small gallery specialised in photography: GunGallery.
The gallery, that was founded in 2008, focuses on international and national contemporary photography and represents both well-established names and young emerging artists.
At the moment there's a show with the Finnish artist Jouko Lehtola, that recently passed away, called Finlandia. The work is violent and beautiful, portraying young people in a sort of Larry Clarkish way, but in a unique visual style and a finnish environment.
The exhibition had not yet opened when I saw it, so a big thank you to the kind owner who let me have a look around the gallery. Until October 17, 2010

Provinssi, 1995

T.o.m. 17 oktober 2010

A taste of garlic/Un parfum de l'ail/Smaken av vitlök

Karin's kamera has been reviewed on A Taste of Garlic, a blog by a brit named Keith living in Brittany. Fun reading since all that interests him is France and beautiful girls! I think I fit pretty well into that picture, haha.

Wilfried in front of his selected photo at the opening of "Paris en août"/devant sa photo selectionné au vernissage de "Paris en août"/framför sin utvalda bild på vernissagen of "Paris en août"

"Paris in August", was the theme of a contest organized by the website MylittleParis in collaboration with mabellephoto. With a certain sense of irony, my pal Wilfried, author of the blog 200 ISO,  sent them a photo of a woman crossing Pont des Arts, hiding under an umbrella, rain pouring down from a dark sky. And he was right to do so, the photo got selected for a show with the twelve best photos! Congrats Wilfried and keep up the good work!

For those who love photo art, I recommend a visit at the gallery La Petite Poule Noir to see the photos of Stéphanie Lacombe.
The exhibition takes us on a journey to childhood and shows us moody landscapes, populated by fantasy creatures.
The photographer, born in -76, and already known for her photojournalistic achievements (she won the prestigious Niépce price in 2009), shows here for the first time her fine art work. The prints are the result of an handmade procedure and the visual language is mystical and invites each and everyone of us to dive into our own memory. Until 3rd of Novembre 2010
p.s. While at the gallery, take the opportunity to buy the second issue of excellent photo magazine Zmâla. You'll find, amonst others, a feature on the new phenomenon that unites press, cinema and television : the web documentary.

Le commentaire qui tu/Hard to digest comment/Jobbig kommentar

L'autoportrait/My self portrait/Självporträttet "La sourcière au cœur d'or"/"The witch with the golden heart"/"Häxan med guldhjärtat"

"Even if the colours and lights are controlled well, even if the play with material is interesting and the perception of space is loaded with time, you're here on the limit of the ridiculous. This is the danger of staging when it is not mastered! I think the heart of light is as exaggerated as the garland of flowers and I pity the appalling gaze from the model…"
Sometimes one moans because people are not giving enough honest remarks about one's photos. I just scored high with the above comment, posted by one of the founders of the famous VU agency on my page for SFR Jeunes Talents.
I ask myself, however - among all the more or less mediocre photos that exist on this website - why did he take the time and energy to comment on mine? I tell myself that somehow I must have succeeded, I just don't know in what way.
